"Townsville" and "magnetic" island

introduction

Townsville is named after Robert Towns who ordered to build a shipyard on the spot. Tourism is becoming increasingly important in Townsville but the main source of income is the port from which minerals from Mount Isa and Cloncurry are shipped, as well as beef, wool, sugar and wood. In addition, the city also has a decent industry and a military naval base. For example, three different metals are processed on a large scale: zinc, copper and nickel. There are a number of attractions in Townsville such as "The Strand". A remarkable fact is that Julian Assange, journalist and activist was born in Townsville.

At 8 km from Townsville lies the perfectly situated island "Magnetic Island" with beautiful bays, opportunities for long walks through desolate area and a wonderful atmosphere. The island is easily accessible by ferries from Townsville.

highlights

Townsville:

Attractions in Townsville include 'The Strand', a long tropical beach, a large sea aquarium with lots of flora and fauna from the Great Barrier Reef, a museum and a number of nice parks and gardens. Major (tourists) attractions in Townsville are missing.

Magnetic Island:

Magnetic island, named after the fact that Captain "Cook's" compass was acting very strange when he approached the island, is about 8 km from Townsville and can be reached by ferry. The island has an area of 52 square kilometers, has some nice little villages and is mountainous. The highest mountain on the island is also named after Captain Cook: Mount Cook is 497 meters high. Maggie, affectionately named by classrooms, has more than 2000 permanent residents and is a country's oldest island resorts. The island is surrounded by the "Great Barrier Reef" national park. Tourism is an important source of income; the island contains a 27-square-kilometer national park and bird sanctuary in which many hiking routes have been constructed. Koala (bears) also appear on the island. The many bays and the favorable climate make the island a popular holiday destination. There are therefore many hotels, resorts, restaurants and cafes. There are a number of popular bays on the island of which "Nelly bay", "Picnic bay", "Geoffrey bay", "Radical bay" and "Horseshoe bay" are the most known. The latter is located on the north side of the island and contains, besides a number of hostels, a number of small shops and a long stretch of good beach. You can also easily walk to the "Koala park" 2 km away or the "Magnetic Mango" which is a plantation. You can easily rent a boat along the beach.
