"pokhara"

introduction

Pokhara is the capital of the Kaski district, located in the Gandaki zone. The city is one of Nepal's most popular tourist destinations due to a combination of nature and culture. It is among other things the starting point for the trips to the mountains of the Annapurna, one of the most popular trekkings worldwide. The city has a wonderfully mild climate, a variety of popular hotels, perfect restaurants and a beautiful panorama of surrounding mountains.

After the invasion of Tibet by the People's Republic of China, the trade route to India came to a standstill and few caravans passed by. However, the loss of trade is compensated by the increase in tourism. First by many Western hippies, nowadays the city is popular for both backpackers and families. The Pokhara valley is inhabited by a mix of Bahun and Chhetris tribes while the Gurungs live in the surrounding mountains.

highlights

Pokhara - city:

The main tourist attraction of Pokhara is the "Phewa Tal" lake. The second largest lake in Nepal is partly built-up and partly forested (nature). You can cycle around the lake and/or take a beautiful boat trip in a brightly colored boat that they call "doongas" here. Of course the panorama of the beautiful "Annapura" mountains from the lake is indescribable and perhaps the biggest plus.

There are a few temples and museums in Pokhara to visit but you also go to the "Seti" river or to the "Devi" waterfalls. Finally it pays to go to the "World Peace" pagoda which is about 1 km outside the city or to take a walk to "Sarangkot" which is about 4 to 5 kilometers northwest of the center. Most tourists therefore remain "hanging" in the "Dam" and "more" neighborhood of Pokhara.

tips & advice (2004)

The airport of Pokhara is located in the middle of the city at about 200 meters east of "Pardi" (the DAM neighborhood). There are local minibuses from here to the lake and the bazar in the north of the city. The chaotic and dirty bus station, on the other hand, is located about 2 km northeast of "Pardi". A local bus will drive you from the lake here for 7 R. This is the arrival point for buses to and from the Indian border.

Pokhara - Besisahar: there is a bus at 07:15 from "Pardi" bus stop (Mustang Chowk) via the bus station to Besisahar (departure point for Anapurna trekking). You arrive around 11:30. Costs around the 85R. Four buses seem to depart every day.

Pokhara - Tadi Bazaar: there is a daily bus from Pokhara to Tadi Bazaar (to get to Chidwan NP). This leaves at 07:30 and arrives at 12:30 - costs 120R.

There are roughly four districts in town where people (tourists) can stay overnight staying in Pokhara. You have the northern "bazaar" district, the area around the airport, the "Pari" or DAMbuurt and finally the most popular area around the lake - the eastern part.

Content:

Wonderfully quiet located in a side street of the very busy main street that runs parallel on the lake, on the east side. Yet very central; the guest house has ample parking space, her own restaurant, a nice bright colored facade and very nice people where you can lay down your big bag, for example, if you are going for a trekking walk. There is also internet available. A spacious nice room with carpet.
