"gondor"

introduction

The city of Gondor, also called the "Camelot" of Africa with the difference that this is not a legend but reality. Surrounded by fertile mountains located in a basin that has become a medium-sized city, Gondor is an ancient capital of emperor "Fasiladas". In the 17th century, this city of commercial caravans allowed a city to be resurrected with palaces, churches and gardens. The Royal Palace with all its rooms can still be visited despite demolitions wrought by Sudanese warriors in 1880 and the bombardments by the British in 1941. Besides the royal rooms you can take a look at the "bath" of Fasiladas and the beautiful church of "Selassie" which is just outside the center.

highlights

"Royal rooms"

Before Addis Ababa became the capital of Ethiopia, Gondar had this honor. Castles were built in the 17th century for the then emperor "Fasiladas". Different architectural styles have been used and it is assumed that Indian, Portuguese, Moorish and Arabic architects have ventured on these buildings. Much has been preserved and now on display. The entire area where up to five castles can be admired is called the palaces of Gondor or the royal rooms. It is totally encircled with high walls and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. In addition to the castles, there are stock draws to discover, the cages with real Abbyssinian lions, stables, baths and a library.

"Fasiladas" bath

This large stone open outdoor swimming pool was used for royal delights, but also for religious celebrations. The stone house that was built above it as a pier probably served as a second home for the then emperor. It is a very peaceful area with large snake-like roots of trees and lots of greenery. Once a year, during the "Timkat" celebration, nowadays the "bath" is filled with water which has to come from some 500 kilometers away. After the priest has blessed the water (like the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan), hundreds of people jump into the water. Incidentally, it takes a month before the bath is filled. The bath is about 2 km away from the palaces.

"Debre Berhan Selassie" church

This church is one of the most beautiful in the country; surrounded by a stone wall with 12 towers that the apostles have to propose. The great tower, Christ, has a representation of the lion of Judeah. It is claimed that the emperor intended to bring here the "Ark of the Covenant." Inside it is mainly the ceiling that appeals to the imagination. Beautiful art in paintings representing saints, martyrs and prophets. It looks very old while it was only built in the 18th century. Legend has it that a swarm of bees have saved this church from devastation when Sudanese warriors brought demolitions here in 1880. The church is located about 1.5 kilometers outside the center – it’s a nice walk through a residential area.

tips & advice (2012)

To the south of the "Royal Palace" lies the large bus station hidden in the middle of a residential area. Large and chaotic like all bus stations in Ethiopia.

Gondor - Geshama (for Lalibela): first you have to go by bus to Geshema; the bus departs at 05:30 whileyou arrive around 13:00. Costs are 154 Birr. And then you can take the bus to Lalibla from Gashema. This costs 40 Birr by bus; 2 o'clock.

TIP: locals will tell you there is no bus between Gashema and Lalibela. Do not be tempted to take an expensive taxi; take a cup of tea and watch the local people and wait for the bus.

Located on a plateau is the beautiful old-fashioned hotel "Terrara". Upon entering you imagine yourself back in time but do not be mistaken - it should actually be subjected to a very thorough renovation because it almost falls apart. But perhaps that is the charm. The large indoor hall, the friendly staff, the guard outside, the cars in front of the hotel and the beautiful large garden with a large terrace where you can drink something surrounded by large palms and other exotic plants. The room I slept in was large (almost a maze) but terribly old and not completely clean. To my knowledge I had some fleas and other vermin in my bed, and looking at the room that was not that strange. It is in the center of the city.
