"bayamo"

introduction

After Baracoa, the city of Bayamo became the second city founded by the Spaniards in 1513 and quickly became an important center for trade and commerce, especially in sugar beet. Now it is the capital of the "Granma" province but can not be compared to the capital of the adjacent "Santiago de Cuba". The city is virtually free of touts and is a relief when you come here; relaxed and very friendly. Formerly the whole south side of the island was called "Oriente" but it was divided in 1975 and this province got the name of the boat with which Fidel set foot from Mexico in 1956 in this province and sealed the last Revolution. The province is in any case a Rebel state because it was here that "Cespedes" liberated its own slaves and the first war of independence began in 1868 against the Spaniards. In 1895 Jose "Marti" started the second war against the colonists here and even though it became a success he was killed less than a month after he started the Revolution.

highlights

The old town:

The old center is not very big and does not have any spectacular highlights. The "General Garcia" is a pedestrian street with many shops, restaurants and cafes and ends at the central square / park of "Parque Cespedes" where the man with the same name in 1868 for the first time declared the independence of the island. There is a beautiful cathedral, church and a few museums. It is especially the relaxed atmosphere that makes you decide to spend time in this provincial capital.

tips & advice (2013)

Bus station: you have two bus stations in Bayamo if I was informed correctly. One near the train station and from here will most likely be leaving the big companies. At the provincial station are among other things the trucks that you can bring to "Bartholome Maso".

Bayamo - Bartholome Maso: At the back, the first right is the truck that takes you to B.M., but otherwise ask at the counter. Unfortunately I had to change twice (to my knowledge in Veguitas and Yara) but the conductors will inform you. In total I paid 15 CP for the entire ride.

I have eaten a delicious pizza at "Pizza Tropical" on the corner of "Gral Paseo" and the big pedestrian street. You can get a pizza here for 10 Cuban pesos (unfortunately you can not sit, but the bench outside will solve this problem) and also a cold can of soda costs 10 CP.

Near the center is this very homely casa particulare located. Ramon and Norma run this hostel and they do their best to make it as pleasant as possible for you. On the ground floor live grandmother and grandfather (lock the door, otherwise grandpa runs away) and the owners and on the upper floor are two rooms available for guests. You have to share the toilet and shower but there is a balcony and a spacious living room and kitchen that you can use. The room is spacious and there is air conditioning. Dinner extra costs 5 CUC. The breakfast is very extensive; lots of fruit, coffee and also bread with eggs. The juice is full and is fantastic.
