Travel Stories - Brazil

"ubatuba"

intro "uba"

It is four hours with the bus from Sao Paula to Ubatuba. From the window in the bus we see the sun shine and some nice beaches before we get off at a small, meaningless terminal. This is not the "beach resort" we had in mind. We ask if there is a tourist information, but it is closed and we are sent to the center which is still quite a walk for information and a placet o stay. Unfortunately we do not have a map of the 65,000-people city and we walk into two pousada's that are far too expensive but fortunately we are send by them to a hostel. This is full but there is another one and we end up in hostel "Aldeia"; we bargain the price to 30R for a dormitory for the two of us with our own shower/toilet where breakfast is included. After we both have a shower we put our stuff together and make ourselves ready for a walk to the boulevard of the town for a bite to eat.

"Surfwind"

After a wonderful quite night we prepare for breakfast; two young Brazilian ladies put fresh bread, coffee, cheese, ham, zuko and “bollo” (cake) in front of us. The breakfast is fantastic. After the laundry, it is almost twelve when we go outside to first walk to the boulevard where the sun is shining, and then via some detours to the beach on the southside of the city. On the way we do some shopping for lunch and when we walk on the beach after quite a bit of walking there is a considerable wind, a surfwind and there is nobody on the beach, other than someone with a dog and a surfer. It is a nice little beach and it is a pity that it is so cold because I would have liked to stay here for an afternoon. We walk to the other beach which is actually the same and then go back, via the "shopping street". For the bakery in the supermarket there is a whole line waiting for fresh bread and we buy yogurt, sausages, bread, cheese and I buy some chips for tonight. Then we walk back and in the kitchen in the hostel behind the fire and make the sausages. We turn on the TV and watch some MTV. Tomorrow it's time to go back to Sao Paulo and then back to Europe (Portugal) by plane. Our South-America trip of 5 months is almost over.

tips & advice (2011)

There are two bus stations in Ubatuba that are about 2 blocks apart. The center is then about 2 blocks further walking.

Sao Paulo - Ubatuba: there are about 8 buses a day to Sao Paulo - the journey takes about 4 hours and costs 50R.

A nice hostel that looks good - when we were there it was very quie but there is a parking lot, a large reception, you can sit outside, the rooms are quite large and very clean. The toilet and shower were in the dormitory itself (where we were the only guests). It is a new building and is therefore super; also the breakfast served in a small room is more than sufficient. Terrible nice people.
