"ilha grande"

introduction

The Brazilians will say that the island of “Ilha Grande” owes its untouched beauty to the forces of evil. At first the island was a popular refuge for pirates, then a leper colony and finally it was used as a prison for the most notorious criminals in the country. Meanwhile, tourism is the main factor and the island contains, next to the ruins of the prison and the picturesque "Vila do Abraao" beautiful sandy beaches. In addition to "Abraao", the island also houses two very small villages and the rest is covered with tropical rainforest. It can only be reached by ferry service from the Mainland.

highlights

Vila do Abraao

The only way to get to the island "Ilha Grande" is with the ferry that is moored in the small harbor of "Vila do Abraao". A picturesque village with palm trees, lovely little houses and a snow-white church. Only the harbor front and the main street are tiled with cobblestones, but just outside the center is sand and gravel. Activities around the village can be - a walk through the tropical rainforest to the remains of the old prison or to one of the super small beaches where locals have made their favorite picknick. In the village itself there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to entertain you, but peace and quiet are the motto here.

tips & advice (2011)

There are daily ferries to the town "Angra" (daily at 10:00) and to "Mangaratiba" (08:00 and 22:00) - both last about two hours. From there you can take the bus to, among others, Rio de Janeiro.

There are a number of very good restaurants in the center and the harbor - pricey but super (romantic) locations.

It is a decent climb to this place but you will not regret it. Because of its location just outside the center it is quiet in the evening and no drunken people walk past your tent. There is a lush garden with a large wooden plateau (veranda or porch) where breakfast is served and you can sit quietly (covered). Sleeping is possible in many places and there are plenty of options. There is a campsite where you can set up your own tent in addition to a number of permanent tents, but there are also rooms and dormitories. I do not think they have a restaurant and you can not bring alcohol to drink here.
